Indonesia believes that the virtual exhibition will serve as a platform to connect penta-helix (government, business, academia, media, creative community) worldwide, enable them to share opportunities and best practices in creative economy. Most notably, the event is aimed at empowering them to express their voices and needs for a creative economy to be inclusive,

resilient and contributing to the sustainable development.

Many studies have shown that creative economy has fostered economic growth and innovation,

eradicated poverty, created full and productive employment as well as decent work for all, improved the quality of life and empowerment of women and young people, and reduced inequality within and among countries.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the businesses under the creative economy sector that have successfully survived are the ones that have adapted and transformed their business using digital technology, from the creative process, production until the products or services delivered to consumers. But unfortunately, most of the creative actors and businesses are still struggling in facing enormous challenges. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), as the biggest part of the value chain in the creative economy, has been hit hard by the pandemic.

The efforts made by the government, community, academics, MSMEs, and the media (Penta-helix) to build back the creative economy sectors should be acknowledged and heard. It is timely to raise awareness of their initiatives so as to gain a public support. A strong public support allows their sustainability which will in turn, bring a positive impact to the community of the people.

Over the recent years, the Indonesian Government has supported the mainstreaming of creative economy sector at the multilateral level by organizing various initiatives as follows:

  • World Conference of Creative Economy 2018
  • The establishment of the Global Center of Excellence and International Cooperation for Creative Economy (G-CINC) as mandated by the Bali Agenda 2018
  • Friends of Creative Economy 2019

In 2019 at the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, 2021 was declared as the International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development. Indonesia was one of the main proponents of the resolution. The resolution No. A/RES/74/198 was adopted in consensus.

The resolution recognized the need to promote sustained and inclusive economic growth, foster innovation and provide opportunities, benefits and empowerment for all and respect for all human rights.

It also identified the ongoing need to support developing countries and countries with economies in transition in diversifying production and exports, including in new sustainable growth areas, including creative industries.

It encourages all to observe the year in accordance with national priorities to raise awareness, promote cooperation and networking, encourage sharing best practices and experiences, enhance human resource capacity, promote an enabling environment at all levels as well as tackle the challenges of the creative economy.
